Friedrich Baur Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts (1996)
Text of the certificate:
The Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in conjunction with the Friedrich Baur Foundation awards Bertold Hummel the Friedrich Baur Prize for Music.
Bertold Hummel is one of the most original and universal of contemporary German composers. His music ranges from piano pieces to chamber operas, from symphonies to sacred oratorios. Hummel knows how to infuse traditional musical forms with the spirit of an idiosyncratic modernity and to create compositions that are sophisticated, yet not alien to the listener. As a composer and cellist, and as the founder and long-standing president of the Würzburg University of Music, he has made a lasting contribution to German musical life.
