Whilst studying together in Freiburg, Emil Maas (violin), Bertold Hummel (cello) and the composer Friedrich Zehm (piano) gave chamber music concerts as the Maas Trio. He took part in the world premiere of Hummel’s String Quartet No. 1, String Quartet, Op. 3, and on 3 May 1952 he gave the world premiere of Hummel’s Sonata for Violin and Piano, Op. 6, at the 2nd German Students’ Day at the Berlin University of the Arts. By 1958 at the latest, Emil Maas had moved to this city, where he remained a member of the Berlin Philharmonic until 1987. The two musicians remained friends throughout their lives.
