Ottmar Faulstich

*1938

Otmar Faulstich was born on 16 December 1938 in Schonungen, Lower Franconia. From 1957, he studied philosophy, theology, classical philology and musicology at the universities of Würzburg and Vienna; from 1963, he also began studying Catholic church music at the Conservatoire in Würzburg, where he took composition lessons with Bertold Hummel.

From 1965 to 1983, Otmar Faulstich worked in the Diocese of Würzburg as cathedral cantor, musical director for the seminary and a member of the diocesan church music department, whilst also holding a teaching post in music theory at the Würzburg University of Music. From 1983 to 2003, he served as a lecturer in composition, form and score reading at the Academy of Catholic Church Music and Music Education in Regensburg (formerly the Fachakademie).

As a composer, Otmar Faulstich devotes himself primarily to works of church music, which have been published by various publishers. Although his numerous compositions are mostly oriented towards the needs of liturgical practice, their thematic and musical design sets accents that transcend the boundaries of the traditional ‘church style’, without denying the connection to valuable traditions.
