The City of Würzburg awards its 1988 Culture Prize to Professor Bertold Hummel on the basis of the City Council resolution of 20 July 1988.

It honours an artist who has rendered outstanding services to cultural life in the city of Würzburg.

As a composer and President of the University of Music in Würzburg, Professor Hummel has had a decisive influence on musical life and has initiated developments of lasting value through his tireless commitment to "New Music".
