Whilst working on my new composition for ‘il capriccio’, I felt a deep need to write music in memory of my father, Bertold Hummel, who passed away in the summer of 2002. I envisaged an adagio that, in a stream of sound, would draw upon my father’s favourite compositional elements and contrapuntal techniques, and towards the end would feature a quotation from the opening bars of his Op. 62 (Adagio in memoriam B. Britten). “Adagio memore” emerged from the emotional intensity of grief, coming to terms with loss and coming to terms with the past.
