Bertold Hummel wrote the Capriccioso at the suggestion of Winfried Wenzl in January 1993 for a talented young instrumental ensemble of the Regensburger Domspatzen. Originally intended as an effective contribution to a chamber music competition, Hummel faithfully integrated the effective piece into the Quintet op. 106, his last major chamber music work, one year before his death. It can be heard here as the final movement under the title Capriccio. Hummel describes it as follows: "The third movement begins with a signal-like introduction, which is followed by a dance-like theme that dominates the entire movement with its variable metre. It is interrupted several times, once by a waltz, later by a chorale-like episode, as well as by a metamorphosis of the introductory bars. A small musical question mark is added to the supposed conclusion."
