I. Great are you, God and Lord,
never to be fathomed.
You are praised by the nations
And your works show
the majesty of your power.
The work of grace shines forth
In the splendour of miracles,
which your hand has wrought.
Great is, O Lord, and good
What your goodness does.
To preserve creation
Righteous is your rule, O Lord,
abundant in favour,
merciful to all beings,
who are healed by your word,
who are conformed to your image.
Faithful is the word of God
And holy it continues to work,
will save those who are drowning,
raise up those who are sinking.
With open hand ready
our eyes will plead
will look upon us with kindness,
will nourish us always.
Georg Thurmair (after Psalm 144 from "The Psalms of David" by Caspar Ulenberg)
II. As God said: let there be
And then there was day, there was light,
was heaven and was earth,
was man, the unharmed one,
was freedom and judgement,
thus spoke before his death
in the last reprieve
to the wine and the bread
the one who was irrevocably threatened,
the Son of Man: this is.
And then bread became his flesh
And wine became his blood,
was marvellously
the divine for food
And all more than good.
Georg Thurmair
III Come Christians, sing praises
To the deeply hidden God
The marvellous food,
the true bread of heaven!
Let us joyfully lift up
The supreme good,
as we live in truth
Of Jesus' flesh and blood.
He is according to God's will
The true paschal lamb,
who came to fulfil
and came to fulfil.
His blood for the salvation of the world,
in him we were forgiven
and hope was given to us.
O love without equal,
that leans towards man,
in such small signs
shows us salvation and rescue.
God presents himself in bread,
which nourishes body and soul
and which resists eternal death
and all evil.
