Weggefährtin alles Schönen,
wo du bist, ist Harmonie,
triffst mit deinen goldnen Tönen
Freude und Melancholie.
Alle Grenzen, alle Mauern
wirst du ewig überdauern.
Einigst Fremde und Nationen,
tröstest Kranke, Greis und Kind,
sollst in allen Menschen wohnen,
die da guten Willens sind.
Hoffnungsvollen Friedenszeiten
wirst du froh den Weg bereiten.
Martin Hummel
Companion of all that is beautiful,
where you are, there is harmony,
meet with your golden tones
Joy and melancholy.
All borders, all walls
you will endure forever.
Unite strangers and nations,
comfort the sick, the old and the child,
shall dwell in all people
who are of good will.
Hopeful times of peace
you will gladly prepare the way.
Martin Hummel
On the occasion of the 1st International Brass Music Festival in Bamberg, Bertold Hummel was commissioned to compose a European anthem. Rather averse to any kind of large-scale political demonstrations, he preferred to set a hymn "To Music" to music, the lyrics of which his son Martin wrote for him for the occasion. On 31 May 1992, the fanfare and anthem were played on Bamberg Cathedral Square with numerous choirs from the region as well as 200 brass bands and marching bands from various nations.
