After the great physical and mental effort involved in the composition and successful premiere of his one-hour anti-war ballet "The Last Flower" (after James Thurber), Bertold Hummel withdrew to his friend Peter Jona Korn 's holiday home in Dorfgastein in August 1975 and composed a whole series of smaller compositions in serene serenity: 10 piano pieces for children, a piano sonatina, songs based on poems by Theodor Storm and the Romance for violoncello and piano, whose rapturous tone perhaps tells of the starry nights of the Austrian mountain landscape.
