Bertold Hummel wrote the Sonatina for piano op. 56a in the summer of 1975 during a holiday in Dorfgastein for his piano-playing sons. Each movement is dominated by a main interval. The Allegro , in classical sonata form, is dominated by the fifth, the songlike Elegy (A-B-A) by the fourth and the rondo-like Vivace by the tritone. For all its formal rigour, Hummel once again presents himself in this cheerful work as a "player with twelve notes" - as he liked to describe himself.
