Bertold Hummel's five pretty, moderately witty "Moments musicaux" for oboe, clarinet and bassoon, miniatures and gimmicks with motifs, musical phrases and rhythms played with a light hand by Franziska von Oyen, Dimitri Ashkenazy and Otis Klöber with great delicacy.
Hummel's five movements for oboe, clarinet and bassoon thrive on the joyful freshness of their sound and combine an easily graspable formal structure with all the nuances of a characteristically expressive world of divertimenti and serenades, whereby nocturne-like passages are just as important as scherzo and rondo elements. The fact that this gesture is not reflected in neoclassical stylistic devices, but in a rather lyrical atonality, is what makes the miniatures so appealing. Added to this is a good dose of virtuosity, which gave the international ensemble of the Weikersheim Chamber Music Class ample opportunity to develop a masterful interplay.
The instruments begin as if they are telling each other something, asking questions and yet leaving them open at the end. Other small movements are witty and can also be heard in full interplay or strongly rhythmic with a light ostinato in the bassoon and clarinet, a very tender ending and a fresh allegro at the end. Eberhard Buschmann has rehearsed this work very well and carefully, which is why the "Moment musicaux " were so excellent and met with great applause.
