In 1956, Hummel composed Pan 56 for solo flute and chamber orchestra, op. 13d, commissioned by the small orchestra Südwestfunk Baden-Baden, which also produced it in the same year under the direction of Willi Stech and often included it in its programmes. The concert piece, entitled quasi Andante, begins with sweeping fioritures in a sparingly accompanied flute cadenza, which leads into a virtuosic dance-like middle section (double tempo). Here the flute part shines over a colourful palette of interesting instrumental combinations and percussion rhythms until it returns to the opening mood. The short six-minute work ends in a gentle pp, offering the soloist many creative possibilities and allowing the listener to visualise the moody god Pan playing in an Arcadian landscape.
