Ave Maria, gratia plena,

nunc et in hora mortis nostrae.
Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with you.
You are blessed among women,

Preface
Bertold Hummel wrote this Ave Maria for his son Martin, who also played the piece accompanied by the family string quartet, as evidenced by a surviving viola part. In it, the anticipation of the first 16 bars is outlined as a prelude.
The two-part composition combines major-minor tonality in thirds with modal harmony. The dominant element of the accompaniment is a descending Phrygian scale, which changes direction over the course of the piece and also undergoes transformations into Dorian and minor. The second part ("Sancta Maria...") takes up the music from the beginning again and leads to new combinations of the musical material.
