Foreword (Schott Music SHS 1024)
"One of my closest friends, the composer Peter Jona Korn, died today. Like me, he was a lone fighter and throughout his life he resisted any mental gagging. I would like to honour his memory." With these words, Bertold Hummel ends his tombeau for PJK on 12 January 1998, the anniversary of his friend's death.
In keeping with the spirit of the dedicatee, Hummel does not shy away from expressing his personal consternation in a beautiful and wistful piece of funeral music, which - with the exception of three brief interpolations - pays homage to 19th century music in terms of form, gestures and harmony. PJK has always regarded this music as the breeding ground for his own compositions. In 1980 he wrote a symphony for wind orchestra entitled "Salute to the Lone Wolves". Hummel probably also chose this instrumentation for his last salute in reference to this.
In addition to the score and parts, this edition also contains the particell with which my father wrote the Tombeau for PJK.
