Hummel's Meditation op. 77a is dedicated to the memory of his deceased friend and organist Waldemar Bohner. The composer combines chorale melody with letters of Bohner's name that can be set to music, a process that goes back to tradition. What is exciting and gripping about Hummel's tonal language is the free form of the piece, a certain restlessness that creates the flow of constantly changing moods, surprising turns, darting runs, lines rising out of the darkness, sudden crescendos, sequences in which the theme is not easily recognisable, but rather can be guessed at.
The meditation is dedicated to the memory of the deceased friend and organist. The musical letters of the name "Waldemar Bohner" (A-D-E-A-B-H-E) appear in the context of the chorale melody "Veni, Sancte Spiritus".
