Bertold Hummel's Sonata in f (written in 1950) is captivating in its concise brevity. The talented Genzmer pupil has achieved a valid success here. The combination of the piano's aphoristic melodies with the expressive phrases of the violoncello (which Hummel himself learnt to master with Teichmanis), its free cantilena in the slow movement with its vividly erupting interjections and the moving finale with its contemplative fugato episodes - all of this is compellingly formed and originally perceived as musical cantabile. The young composer was enthusiastically celebrated alongside his excellent interpreters (Atis Teichmanis / Liesel Heidersdorf).
