Hummel's three-movement sonatina for violin and piano is a seamless continuation of its successful predecessors from the 70s and 80s. Here, too, there are striking themes, rhythms in irregular metre ("Zwiefacher"), elegiac cantilenas, virtuoso-sounding runs and a grotesque march theme that challenge young people and are fun to play.
At the suggestion of Hummel's wife Inken, always on the lookout for usable modern pieces for her violin students, the publishing house Vogt & Fritz published this transcription of the Flute Sonatina op. 107a1 in 2005 in a carefully edited edition for violin and piano. Hummel's daughter-in-law Margret took care of the bowing and fingerings. Mastery of the "fourth position" on the violin is necessary for rehearsal.
