In spring 1999, Bertold Hummel was contacted by the former concert singer Elfriede Forbrig (31 December 1922-14 December 2018), who also appeared as a soprano soloist in the oratorio performances conducted by Hummel in Freiburg's St. Konrad Church. She has now founded a saxophone trio, she writes to him and asks for three-part movements of church melodies that she would like to play in her congregation. Hummel is delighted that contact has been re-established and replies: "... and now the surprise with the saxophone playing. So there's a parallel, I also came across the saxophone in my old days." First he sends her 3 chorale preludes (I. Die Nacht ist vorgedrungen, II. Ich bete an die Macht der Liebe, III. Harre, meine Seele) and sent the remaining three in a second despatch. In a folder from his estate, he outlines the sequence shown above. The chorales IV., I. and VI. could be put together to form a little Advent music.
