Hans Musch and Bertold Hummel have known each other since the 1950s. When Hummel moved to Würzburg in 1963, Musch took over his post as cantor at the parish of St Konrad in Freiburg. On 20 December 1970, Hans Musch performed the world premiere of the Three Marian Frescoes for solo organ, Op. 42, at Freiburg Minster.

Biography
Hans Musch was born on 20 January 1935 in Stankt Leonard in the Allgäu. His studies in school music, Catholic church music, conducting, musicology, classical philology and Romance languages took Hans Musch to Freiburg, Rome and Munich. In 1967, he obtained his doctorate under Hans Heinrich Eggebrecht with a thesis on Costanzo Festa as a madrigal composer.

At the State University of Music in Freiburg, he worked from 1966 as a lecturer in organ, from 1970 as a full-time university lecturer, and from 1980 until 2000 as a professor.

As a member of the Conference of Directors of Catholic Training Institutions, of which he was chairman from 1981 to 1985, he published the two-volume textbook *Musik im Gottesdienst* in 1975.

Musch chaired the international organ conference organised by the Society of Organ Friends ‘Orgelkunst am Oberrhein’, which took place in 1989. He also served as the archbishop’s organ inspector. As an organist, Musch gave concerts in numerous European countries and in the USA. He died on 8 March 2023 in Freiburg im Breisgau at the age of 88.
