In 1994, Bertold Hummel was commissioned by the Archbishopric of Munich and Freising to arrange the Kyrie and Gloria of his Missa brevis op. 18b (from 1959) for choristers, 4-part mixed choir, organ and wind instruments. These two parts of the mass were performed at the 1994 Church Music Day of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising and were published as a special edition by the local Office for Church Music in a choir booklet.
On 12 February 1994 Bertold Hummel wrote to Michael Heigenhuber:
Dear Mr Heigenhuber
Enclosed you will find my homework by fax. I hope that you will be able to cope with it. One trumpet and one trombone should play the c.f. with the people. Otherwise the brass section can be a trombone choir (with trumpet, trombone and horns, with tuba of course).
Yours sincerely, Bertold Hummel
