The creation of this ordinarium for unison choir, congregation and organ is due to a competition to which Bertold Hummel was invited by the General Cecilia Association of Germany, Austria and Switzerland in 1959 along with four other composers. As cantor of the St. Konrad parish in Freiburg/Breisgau, the Missa brevis (without Credo) op. 18b for choristers, unison choir, congregation and organ served Bertold Hummel as suitable literature on Sundays when the choir's presence was weak. The later version, which divides the choir into soprano and alto voices (op. 18c), is very popular in many parishes.
