The Eight Bagatelles op.103c for oboe solo, which can also be played by cor anglais in F or soprano saxophone in B flat, are short pieces that emphasise the playful and entertaining aspect. It is tonal playing music, easy to follow, made interesting by echo effects, small rhythmic shifts or witty suggestions. It offers nothing new, but the familiar in an appealing form. As the technical demands are not very high, the bagatelles are suitable for young players who can demonstrate their musical (and dynamic!) abilities here.

The Eight Bagatelles were written in the last few days at the suggestion of a little pupil of Mrs Buchholz-Suziki, who asked me whether I had composed something for oboe that she could play. Now, of course, she will have to practise a bit.
