Abendwolkenbilder

Wolkenbilder hat der Südwind
an die Himmelswand gemalt
kurz bevor die Abendsonne
sanft verglomm im Birkenwald.

Purpurrote Segelschiffe,
hingehauchte Zauberfeen,
langgezogene Gespenster,
die gekrümmt nach Norden sehn.

Buschgazellen, Hirsche, Rehe
- alle fein und elegant -
weiden dort am Abendhimmel
von der Sonne rot gebrannt.

Nichts ist wohl so unbedeutend
für das Zeit- und Weltgeschehn
als die Abendwolkenbilder
- nichts ist aber auch so schön.

Evening cloud pictures

The south wind has painted
cloud pictures on the sky wall
just before the evening sun
gently faded in the birch forest.

Purple sailing ships,
airy fairies,
elongated ghosts,
looking bent to the north.

Bush gazelles, deer, roe deer
- all fine and elegant -
graze there in the evening sky
burnt red by the sun.

Nothing is so insignificant
for the course of time and the world
than the evening clouds
- but nothing is as beautiful.
