The old pond.
A frog leaps in.
The sound of water.
In these few words, Matsuo Bashō’s most famous haiku unfolds a whole world – and it is precisely this art of condensed perception that lies at the heart of the new concert by the consortium vocale berlin.
Two masterpieces of 20th-century choral music come together: R. Murray Schafers’ *Seventeen Haiku* and Bertold Hummel’s *11 Haiku for mixed choir and vibraphone* explore how the Japanese poetic form can be transformed into sound – into silence, into resonance, into the moment. The programme is complemented by the world premiere of a newly commissioned composition by the composer Aoi Hasegawa.
An evening poised between breathlessness and silence, between a traditional sense of form and a new musical language.
The project is funded by the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion.
