In an age that in many ways endeavours to build on the urban traditions of past centuries in order to regain the quality of life lost in the present, it is certainly no anachronism to write music for a tower in the hope that it will find an audience. Bertold Hummel's five-movement work is entirely tailored to its purpose in terms of instrumentation and compositional structure. Modelled on baroque quatrocinas, the movements are mostly homophonic, with short phrases developed from unison motifs in dynamic gradations and exciting tonality. The tonal language is orientated towards tradition and is rich in contrast and not without rhythmic sophistication. The piece is less suitable for choral performance. Soloists will enjoy it.
