op. 81e, 1st movement
A broadly sweeping melody opens the first piece at a very slow tempo. A motoric Presto section abruptly interrupts the mood. This is repeated - with varying emphasis - several times over the course of the movement. A short, lively coda concludes the Monologue.
In “Contrasts”, various birdcall models are played off against each other, comparable to a mobile.
Virtuoso writing, fluttering tonguing and rubato playing come to the fore in the concluding Presto.
