The short, very contrasting movements are composed in a 12-tone style.
1) The restrained opening develops a fanfare-like character in a very small space, which is reduced at the end.
2) The clarinet rises quasi recitatively above a sound surface in the piano to end the movement with a short arioso.
3. the animated movement sequences were inspired by conversational gestures (clarinet solo - piano solo - clarinet solo).
4. a 3-part song form in slow time contains both lyrical and dramatic moments (piano solo - clarinet solo - piano solo).
5. variations in rondo form in fast tempo effectively conclude the aphoristic work.
