Metaphors serve as images to visualise the spiritual. The musical form of the three metaphors is clearly structured into gestures, motoric sequences, interruptions and meditative episodes.
The distinctive combination of instruments resulted from the commission for a Polish ensemble from Szczecin, which premièred the work in Swinemünde in 1997. In the meantime, the work has also been performed in a version with violin instead of flute (with minor modifications - for example tremolo sul ponticello instead of flutter tongue).
