I.
Tu mir, o Herr, mein Ende kund
und welches das Maß meiner Tage sei,
auf dass ich wisse, wie sehr ich vergänglich bin.
Du hast meinen Tagen nur wenige Spannen gegeben;
fast wie ein Nichts ist mein Leben vor Dir,
Nur einem Hauche gleicht des Menschen Bestand.
Wie ein bloßer Schatten geht er dahin,
umsonst treibt er den Lärm;
er rafft zusammen und weiß nicht, wer es einst haben wird. (Psalm 39, 5-7)

Und nun: was erwarte ich noch, o Herr?
Meine Zuversicht steht fest auf Dir. (Psalm 39, 8)
Ich breite nach Dir meine Hände aus:
wie dürres Land, so dürstet nach Dir meine Seele. (Psalm 143, 6)
Denn bei Dir ist des Lebens Quell,
und in Deinem Lichte sehn wir das Licht. (Psalm 36,10)
III.
So kehre denn, meine Seele, zu Deiner Ruh,
der Herr hat Gutes an mir getan.
Er hat mir die Seele vom Tode befreit,
die Augen vom Weinen, die Füße vom Sturz.
Ich darf noch wandeln vor Gott
in der Lebendigen Land.

My confidence is in you. (Psalm 39:8)
I spread out my hands to you:

For with You is the fountain of life,
and in Your light we see the light. (Psalm 36:10)

So turn, my soul, to your rest,
the Lord has done good for me.
He has delivered my soul from death,
my eyes from weeping, my feet from falling.
I may still walk before God
in the land of the living.

The Sacred Concerto was composed in 1951 and premiered in November of the same year in Freiburg i. Brsg. (Melanchton Church) by Jörg Brena and Dieter Weiss. This is probably one of the first settings of the psalms translated by Romano Guardini (Munich 1950). Ariose leading of the singing voice and contrapuntal organ interludes evoke a baroque gesture that utilises a harmony typical of Bertold Hummel.
