The Scherzo for Bassoon and Chamber Orchestra, op. 13e, was written in 1957 as a commission for the Kleines Orchester of the Südwestfunk (South-West Radio) Baden-Baden. The solo part in this short concert piece, marked Allegro molto, was conceived expressly for the talents of the principal bassoonist of the orchestra, Helmut Böker. Virtuosic and slightly impudent, it fulfils completely the expectations the title awakes.
